Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said the ring
took in about $1 million a year in bets. At least four of the
men charged were part of the Genovese crime family and one was
a member of the Lucchese crime family.

"As part of the investigation search warrants were executed
in 16 locations resulting in the seizure of numerous gambling
records as well at $162,937 in cash," Morgenthau said in a
statement.

He said eight of the men were indicted on enterprise
corruption charges, and the remaining three were charged with
gambling-related crimes. The charges followed a 17-month
investigation that included phone taps and a car bug.

The Genovese and Lucchese families are part of the
traditional mob, known as the five families of New York.
